Holy Week always begins with a strange kind of stillness. Palm Sunday is full of movement and noise with branches waving, crowds shouting, hope rising like a song you can’t help but join in. But that quickly changes when we get to Monday, as the tone shifts; the story slows.; the crowds thin; and Jesus walks straight into the Temple and starts clearing space.
It’s not the gentle, soft‑focus Jesus we sometimes see. Instead it’s the Jesus who refuses to let clutter — spiritual, emotional, or practical — take up the space meant for prayer, presence, and communion with God. And let’s be honest, isn’t that the Jesus we need on a Monday!
My house will be called a house of prayer.
Matthew 21:13
Jesus wasn’t just tidying, He was restoring purpose by reclaiming sacred space and making room for what mattered.
Monday of Holy Week invites us to ask ourselves a question – What needs cleared out of my life so that God can move freely in me again?
It’s not meant as a question to make us feel guilty , instead it is meant as a reminder that
- This thing is draining me.
- This habit is crowding out God’s peace.
- This fear is taking up too much emotional space in my life.
- This resentment is sitting where grace should be.
Jesus doesn’t clear space to shame us.He clears space to free us.
I encourage you to take five minutes to sit in quietness and
- Just breathe
- Ask God – What in me needs room to breathe again?
You might be surprised by what response you get from God. You might also be relieved.
