Finding rest in the rhythm of summer

This weekend is the first weekend of the summer holidays here as the schools have finally broken up. The mornings feel a little lighter, the roads a little quieter, and there’s a gentle exhale across our communities as families step into a different rhythm for a few weeks.

For many, summer means packing a suitcase, heading to the airport, or driving somewhere with the promise of sunshine, sea air, and a change of scenery. Holidays can be a gift — a chance to switch off, to breathe deeply, to let the mind and body relax after months of routine and responsibility. There’s something healing about stepping away from the familiar and allowing ourselves to be refreshed.

But it’s also true that not everyone goes away. Not every summer includes flights, hotels, or sandy beaches. And that’s okay.

Rest doesn’t only happen in far‑off places. Sometimes it happens in the quiet corners of our own homes.

For many people, time off looks like slow mornings, catching up on sleep, pottering around the house, or garden, spending time with family, or simply enjoying the freedom of not having to be anywhere at a particular time. It might be a walk in the park, a coffee with a friend, or an afternoon spent doing absolutely nothing — and discovering that “nothing” is exactly what was needed.

Whether we travel or stay put, the heart of a holiday is the same: to recharge, to reset, and to prepare for what comes next.

Work will resume.

Responsibilities will return.

Life will pick up its pace again.

But these days — whether spent abroad or at home — give us space to gather strength for the next round of work, the next set of challenges, the next season of life.

So as the summer holidays begin, may they bring a sense of calm.

May rest find you wherever you are.

And may your break, however it looks, give you exactly what you need to step into the weeks ahead with renewed energy and quiet confidence.
