Countdown!

There’s a pressure that always exists when you work in a roles where there’s a constant demand for multiple projects to be completed urgently. It’s not a gentle rhythm, not the kind that drifts in like a melody or settles quietly like evening rain. It’s more like a constant drumbeat — steady, insistent, and impossible to ignore. And this week already, that drum has been pounding.

The list of projects feels endless just now. As soon as we start work on one project, another arrives, already marked “high priority,” already needing attention, already competing for space in a diary that’s stretched thin. We do our best to develop, deliver, and keep things moving. But even when you’re good at organising and juggling multiple things, the weight of everything eventually makes itself known.

There’s a toll that comes with always being “on,” always being needed, always being the one who must find a way to make it work. And I’ve felt that toll more sharply these past few weeks. The tiredness that doesn’t quite lift. The sense of running on fumes. The quiet hope that tomorrow’s tasks might be just a little lighter, even though you know they won’t be.

But here’s the thing keeping me going: my countdown has begun.

Two weeks of annual leave are waiting for me on the horizon — not far off now, close enough that I can almost feel the shift in pace. Two weeks to breathe. Two weeks to step back from the urgency. Two weeks to let my shoulders drop and my mind settle. Two weeks to remember what life feels like when it isn’t measured in deadlines.

And that hope — that promise of rest — is enough to carry me through the never‑ending list for just a little bit longer.

So if you’re reading this at the end of your own long week, maybe with your own stack of urgent tasks still sitting on your desk, I hope you’ve got something on the horizon too. A break. A pause. A moment to recharge. Because even in the busiest seasons, it’s the thought of rest that helps us keep going.

My countdown has started. Maybe yours has too.
