Do you know one of these?

If anyone is qualified to make this statement, Christopher Reeve is! On May 27, 1995, Reeve was left quadriplegic after being thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition in Virginia, in the USA. He now requires to use a wheelchair and a portable ventilator for the rest of his life.

But heroes don’t always come with such obvious obstacles to overcome, or appear to have the strength required to overcome what seem like insurmountable challenges. Heroes can be people like you and me. Heroes can be the person who says hello to a lonely neighbour; the friend you calls late at night just to check you’re ok; the stranger who stops and gives a homeless person food and water.

Anyone who makes a difference in someone else’s life is a true real-life hero. Are you being a hero to someone today?

Help!

Help, an urgent call for assistance.

Here you are in the middle of something important when you hear someone shouting for help…but do you respond?Help

Hope that it’s nothing serious.

Hope it’s not someone I know.

Here, all these thoughts going round in your head.

Hear the cries as you rush to help.

Hope you can get there in time, and make a difference, and offer hope and reassurance.

Hero, that’s the word used.

However, hero’s the wrong word, as we were just being a good citizen, looking out for your fellow human-beings.

How many would stop and help a complete stranger in their hour of need?

Help others in their time of need, it’s all we can do, and everything we can do.

My hero

A few years ago when I felt there was no reason for me to go on, I found my hero…although I realised later my hero had been with me the whole time…

my hero

God was my hero then, and he is still my hero today.

How about you, have you found your hero yet?

Do you know any ordinary heroes?

If so, what it is about them that makes you consider them to be an “ordinary hero”?

Here’s Christopher Reeve‘s definition of what makes someone an ordinary hero:

A hero is an ordinary person who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles

ordinary hero

For me, that definition helped me to realise that, despite my initial feelings that I didn’t know any “ordinary heroes”, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I hope that as you’ve thought about people you know who are ordinary heroes, you’ve realised that they are in fact so much more any ordinary heroes…they are in fact extra-ordinary heroes!

Superman, Batman, Spiderman, The Hulk, Wonder Woman, Captain America, etc…

What have all these fictional characters have in common? Yes, they’re all superheroes.

When we watch a film or a TV show with superheroes, have you noticed how when they overcome the gangsters or villains, everyone is very happy and it makes us happy too.

Could it be that the world is simply looking for a real-life superhero?

We need not look very far for a real superhero, as when you consider the criteria which define a superhero, Jesus satisfies everyone of them. If anything, Jesus did more than any superhero could ever do, He was born of a virgin, died on a cross and then rose again.

But Jesus isn’t just a superhero, He’s a saviour and a friend…He’s my saviour and my friend, and He wants to be you saviour and friend too, and all you need to do is ask Him!

Never a Better Hero by Kenneth Cope

Making His home with the lonely
Spending His days with the poor
Bring hope to their hearts
Giving man a new start with

His cure But not all would receive of His offering
Some even planned His decease
Yet He couldn’t forsake
Those whose lives He might save
So He refused to leave

(Chorus)
Never a better hero
Never a truer man
Hopin‘ to save us
By taking our pain in His hands
Never a greater compassion
Never a wasted day
Not one regret, true to the end
There was never a better way

Now He knew His life would be shortened
But never murmured a word of complaint
For He had in mind
A much greater design
And it helped Him through the pain

He gave men power to take Him
Knowing His death would bring life
And it was no surprise
There was love in His eyes when He died

(Chorus)

But death was not the end
For He would live again

(Chorus)

All that He did
Follow and live
There’ll be never a better way

All For Jesus by Paul Baloche

Every step of faith every sacrifice
Every prayer that’s prayed from an honest heart
You alone deserve every breath of worship
I just want to say How great You are

It’s all for You every song of praise
It’s all for You every hand that’s raised
Everything I am everything I do
Is all for You
All for You

I want to let You know that You are my hero
I’m a grateful soul that’s been redeemed
All creation sings all the Earth adores You
From the highest star to the deepest sea
All for You
All for You

We’re always being told that everything we do must be done for Jesus. But do we really try our best to ensure all we do really is for God?

Sometimes I think we all get caught up by what’s around us, the people and our belongings, however to do everything for God we must put aside our own desires and wishes because ultimately God will provide all we need in every situation.

Therefore live your life for God, praise Him and thank Him, and He will continue to provide for you.

As I spoke about in In Need of a Hero, I think we all need a hero at some point in our life – a brave strong person who will never let us down. As youngsters we find role models who we want to try to emulate, while as adults we probably identify our hero as someone who has achieved something we wish we could achieve or someone we wish we were more like – Either way, young or older, we all still consciously or subconsciously have heroes or role models in our life.

There’s only one problem with the role models or heroes we often choose for ourselves…they can quickly and easily to something to make them go from being a hero to meaning nothing to us. All it takes it one word, or one action and any kudos the person has acquired can easily be shattered.

Although many role models and heroes can often let us down, Jesus never will. So if you’re looking for a true hero who will never let you down, make Jesus your hero today.

Who or what do you think of when you hear the word “hero“?

Well here’s the dictionary definition of a hero:

  • a man distinguished by exceptional courage, nobility, fortitude, etc
  • a man who is idealized for possessing superior qualities in any field
  • (Myth & Legend / Classical Myth & Legend) Classical myth a being of extraordinary strength and courage, often the offspring of a mortal and a god, who is celebrated for his exploits
  • the principal male character in a novel, play, etc.

Do you need a hero?

Sometimes life can be so tough and there seems no way to get through it. That’s when we could all use a hero, strong brave person who will never let us down.

Who is there like that?

Let Jesus be your hero today!
