Over the last few months in my series that started with my blog post Music to Touch Our Hearts I told you about a number of pieces of music/songs which always get me very emotional. Now today, I want to finish this series of Musical Emotions by talking to you about the song entitled Amazing Grace (My Chains Fell Off).

It’s been a few weeks since my previous post in this series, however I wanted to leave this final one until Easter, as this song embodies the whole reason for Easter as far as I’m concerned:

Amazing grace
How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I’m found
Was blind, but now I see
‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed
My chains are gone
I’ve been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
And like a flood His mercy rains
Unending love, Amazing grace

The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
The sun forbear to shine
But God, Who called me here below
Will be forever mine
Will be forever mine
You are forever mine

Easter for me is all about the cross, and how without that I would still be lost as I’d still be carrying all my burdens around with me. However because of the cross, I’ve been set free, all because My God, my Saviour has ransomed me. Wow!

I mentioned in To Die For that Easter is my favourite time of year. I hope over the last couple of weeks as I’ve spoke about Easter, that I may have helped you feel a little bit of the pain and grief Jesus suffered on the cross, but also the amazing feeling that you too can have when you let God set you free from your burdens and chains. Let God in to your life and let Him release you!

I hope you are as blessed and moved by Chris Tomlin singing Amazing Grace (My Chains Fell Off) as I am every time I hear it – Enjoy

  1. Wow! Thanks for sharing this Dot. I first heard this version at a ‘Design for Life’ weekend back in 2007. It came to mean so much because after that weekend I really could sing “My chains are gone, I’ve been set free…”. I haven’t listened to this song for a long time but in the here and now, I’m pleased I have this evening. Thank you 🙂

I’m so glad I was able to remind you that “your chains are gone”…forever, all because of Jesus. Thank you for sharing your experience/memories related to this song Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone). .x

Thank you for sharing this song, Dot. As I briefly mentioned on Twitter this song holds some memories for me that arent particularly good. These memories are from 3 years ago, and I havent listened to this song since then because of what it represents for me. I had put it at the back of my mind until tonight when I read your blog post. It has stirred up alot of emotions in me, and I have yet to actually listen to it. But I would like to thank you because now, when I do get the ‘courage’ to press play, I will be able to remember the real message behind the song, and forget the past.

    Thanks Dot 🙂

So sorry that this song holds some bad memories for you, but I pray you my be able to give them to God this easter as you are reminded of the true reason we celebrate Easter. .x
