Numbers

There are a lot of situations in life these days, where the focus seems to be all about numbers. i.e. The number of people who attend, the number of people who “like” something etc. While ultimately it is the aim of every Christian, that everyone believes in Christ, our churches SimplyChurchPeoplemust not become too focused on the numbers that come through their doors, but instead focus on spreading God‘s message to the uninformed.

Mother Teresa once said,

Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you.

and this I think backs up my earlier statement…that our focus should be on spreading God’s message, and not necessarily on counting numbers in our churches – Although obviously the more who accept God in their life, the more likely it is that more people will attend our churches.

Let’s just make sure we get our priorities right and make winning others for Christ our priority.

  1. Well, some interesting comments here. It is not just enough to believe in Christ, as scripture clearly tells us even the demons know He exists. To just believe but not take it any further by praying, wanting to learn, obeying Him, demonstrating His characteristics and baptism and church attendance ,all led by God’s spirit ,is simply acknowledging He is there, but He needs to see these things. We need to make an initial confession of faith and allocate time in prayer to receive the guidance and support we know awaits. I disagree, I know and see that the churches’ numbers are too low and filled with our dedicated elderly folks. But, nothing will change unless changes are made. He needs to see commitment and worship and will honour our faith. We all need to encourage family, friends, neighbours, associates to come along and also us attenders contribute to ways to bring interest and accommodate people of all ages. We all need to ask ourselves some questions. Do we talk about God to others outside church? Do we say and do things to show we follow Him? Do we fit in or stand out where we are? Are we praying for others to know him or content just to know Him for ourselves? Do we throw our handsup in disarray at the world’s needs or lift them to pray? It is not just the responsibility of our Ministers and Elders to minister but we all have a personal ministry available to us every day, in every situation no matter if the number is one person or a crowd. We need to stand out in the crowd so that the crowd will follow us to Him. And, the good news is that He supplies the strength and confidence to do it.
