At the break of day

Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.

In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before you
and wait expectantly.

Psalm 5:3 (NIV)

I’m not a morning person, I never have been (and probably never will be), so I always like to ease into my day slowly, and quietly. I’d prefer not to have to set an alarm at all to get me up in the morning, however to ensure I wake up on time on work days, I actually set two alarms – one at the time I should get up, and the other for 5 minutes later, just in case the first one doesn’t go off or I don’t get up when it goes off!

In the past when I was working in the office rather than from home, I used to start my day by checking the traffic, in case there was anything that may affect my journey to the office, an then check the news in case anything significant had happened in the world while I slept. I stopped doing this a number of months ago, not just because I do not need to check the traffic news because I’m working from home, but because I realised that the images and news stories from around the world that I read first thing in my day, stayed in my mind the rest of the day. This was my reminder that I should be starting my day with God, not with the news!

There are a few bible readings which I’ve found helpful to read at the start of my day – I shared one at the start of these devotions, and want to share another now as it reminds us that we must trust God for all that the day ahead will send our way.

Let the dawning day bring me revelation
of your tender, unfailing love.
Give me light for my path and teach me, for I trust in you.

How do you start your day? Do you start each day with God?

There is no better way to start each day than to ask God to be part of it, no matter what it may bring.

The sun comes up
It’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass
And whatever lies before me
Let me be singing
When the evening comes
