Who do you say I am?

Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.

I had a couple of lines of a song stuck in my head last weekend. It was really annoying as I couldn’t remember what song the lyrics came from. Here’s the lyrics:

When you asked the simple question, 'Who do you say I am?'
So many answers surfaced in my mind;

While I struggled to remember what song these words came from, I found I was asking myself, who do I say Jesus is? Jesus also asks his disciples who do you say I am?

When Jesus arrived in the villages of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “What are people saying about who the Son of Man is?”

They replied, “Some think he is John the Baptizer, some say Elijah, some Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”

He pressed them, “And how about you? Who do you say I am?”

Simon Peter said, “You’re the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Matthew 16:13-16 (The Message)

As I continued to try to remember what song the words that were stuck in my head, came from, I realised Simon Peter’s response to Jesus’ question “who do you say I am?”, were also my response to the question who do I say Jesus is? because Jesus is my Lord, the Christ, and the meaning of all life.

And on remembering those words, I remembered what song the words I’d had in my head, were from – ‘My Lord and Christ’ by Yvonne Field.

You're the Lord, the Christ;
The one and only sacrificed.
YOu're the focus and direction,
The meaning of all life;
The Lord and Christ!
