Nobody

Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.

In the vastness of this world, and all that we have to deal with in life, it can be easy at times to feel like a nobody. How others treat us, plus our own personality contributes to how we feel about ourselves, and our worthiness for others to love us. Have you ever questioned what God sees in you, or why he has chosen you, and why you are not a nosy in God’s eyes?

It is not because of who we are that God chooses us but because of who He is.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

As this verse from 1 Peter indicates, the proper response to being chosen by God is to shout God’s praise and worship Him.

Do you remember at school having to pick teams for whatever sport we were doing at PE that day — it was always the tallest, fastest, most athletic, most popular, etc., people who were chosen first to be on a team. God doesn’t choose us like that, as His criteria for is not based on our qualities or abilities.

Consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world . . . God chose what is weak in the world . . . God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not . . . so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus

1 Corinthians 1:26-30 (ESV)

Why did God choose you? He chose you to demonstrate His own character. He chose you so that you may know Him and love Him. He chose you because He is love, He is gracious, He is merciful, and He has a glorious plan for you.

God made each one of us, and has chosen us as His own. God does not consider anyone to be a nobody, as He loves and cares for everyone.

Why You ever chose me
Has always been a mystery
All my life I've been told I belong
At the end of the line
With all the other not-quites
With all the never-get-it-rights
But it turns out they're the ones You were looking for
All this time

'Cause I'm just a nobody
Trying to tell everybody
All about Somebody
Who saved my soul
Ever since You rescued me
You gave my heart a song to sing
I'm living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus
I'm living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus

Well, Moses had stage fright
Oh, David brought a rock to a sword fight
You picked twelve outsiders nobody would have chosen
And You changed the world
Well the moral of the story is
Everybody's got a purpose
So when I hear that devil start talking to me saying
"Who do you think you are?"
I say

I'm just a nobody
Trying to tell everybody
All about Somebody
Who saved my soul
Ever since You rescued me
You gave my heart a song to sing
I'm living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus
I'm living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus

So let me go down, down, down in history
As another blood-bought faithful member of a family
And if they all forget my name, well that's fine with me
I'm living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus

'Cause I'm just a nobody
Trying to tell everybody
All about Somebody
Who saved my soul
(Gonna save, gonna save my soul)
Ever since You rescued me
You gave my heart a song to sing
(You gave me a song to sing)
I'm living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus
