The unknown battles

Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.

In last week’s Wednesday Devotions, we remembered that in every situation God goes before us. In this last week I’ve found myself continuing to consider this, but from a slightly different angle.

God doesn’t just go before us in every situation, to guide you, but also to protect you from what you never saw coming.

Some of the greatest miracles in your life are the ones you’ll never know about.

  • The accident you avoided.
  • The conversation that softened before you arrived.
  • The temptation that never reached you.
  • The spiritual attack that never touched you because God stepped in first.

We often thank God for what we see Him do, but his perspective is even wider. There are battles God fights on your behalf that you’ll only understand when you look back and realise, “I should have been overwhelmed… but I wasn’t.”

In 2 Kings 6, Elisha’s servant panicked when he saw the enemy army surrounding them, but Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord.”, and suddenly the servant saw what had been true all along – God’s armies were already there, surrounding the enemy that surrounded them.

You may feel outnumbered today.
You may feel unprepared.
You may feel like the enemy has the upper hand.

But the truth is this:

  • God has already gone ahead.
  • He is already defending you.
  • He is already working for your good in places you cannot see.

So instead of fear, let this be your prayer:
“Lord, lead me, even into the battles I don’t know I’m fighting.”

In this last week, as well as continuing to think about God going before us, I’ve had the song ‘He Will Hold Me Fast’ going round my head – Specifically the words of the first verse.

When I fear my faith will fail
Christ will hold me fast
When the tempter would prevail
He will hold me fast
I could never keep my hold
Through life's fearful path
For my love is often cold
He must hold me fast

He will hold me fast
He will hold me fast
For my Savior loves me so
He will hold me fast

These, words are a powerful reminder that God not only leads us but keeps us secure. In every battle seen and unseen, may this truth anchor us — “He Will Hold Me Fast.”
