Many of you will know, I used to play a lot of tennis up until a few years ago. It’s therefore no surprise to me that when I was reminded of a quote from one of the tennis greats, Arthur Ashe, I just had to use it as the basis of today’s post.
Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
Arthur Ashe
Sunday evenings carry a quiet kind of honesty. The week behind us has already told its story; the week ahead waits like an unopened book. And in this gentle space between what has been and what will be, Arthur Ashe’s words feel especially grounding.
Start where you are.
Not where you wish you were. Not where others expect you to be. Just here — in the real, imperfect, hopeful present. There is something freeing about admitting that today’s starting point is enough. You don’t need a grand plan to move forward; you simply need to acknowledge the moment you’re in.
Use what you have.
We often underestimate the quiet strengths we carry: resilience shaped by past challenges, kindness that has already lifted someone’s day, creativity that flickers even when we’re tired. Tonight is a reminder that what you have is not small. It’s the raw material of tomorrow’s progress.
Do what you can.
Not everything. Not perfectly. Just what you can. Small steps still move you forward. A single act of courage, a gentle decision, a moment of clarity — these are the seeds of change.
As this Sunday evening settles, let Ashe’s words breathe fresh hope into your week. You don’t need to have everything figured out. You simply need to begin — right where you are, with what you have, doing what you can.
May your week open gently, with purpose, peace, and the quiet confidence that small beginnings still lead to beautiful places.
