Harvesting more than crops

At our Salvation Army in Bellshill this weekend, we celebrated Harvest. Our worship space was filled with lots of produce, to be used in our food bank in the coming weeks. The display reminds us of God’s abundant provision and the many blessings we enjoy each day.

But harvest is about much more than food.

Every harvest tells a story. Before there can be a crop, there must be preparation. Fields are ploughed, seeds are sown, and months of patient waiting follow. The farmer cannot force growth. The rain must fall, the sun must shine, and nature must take its course. Yet through it all, the farmer remains faithful, tending and nurturing until the harvest is ready.

In many ways, God works with us in the same manner.

When we first place our trust in Christ, God plants seeds within our hearts. Seeds of faith, hope, love, kindness, patience, and compassion. These qualities do not appear fully formed overnight. Instead, God carefully cultivates them throughout our lives. Through seasons of joy and seasons of challenge, He is shaping us, pruning us, teaching us, and helping us grow more into the image of Jesus.

Some seasons feel fruitful and productive. Others may feel slow or difficult. Yet even when we cannot see growth, God is still at work beneath the surface.

The Apostle Paul writes:

Neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.

1 Corinthians 3:7

What a comforting reminder. We are not responsible for making ourselves grow spiritually through our own efforts alone. Our role is to remain rooted in Christ, allowing God to do His transforming work within us.

As we thank God this Harvest Sunday for fields, farms, gardens, and food on our tables, let us also thank Him for the harvest He is producing in our lives. Every act of kindness, every step of faith, every moment of forgiveness, and every expression of Christ-like love is evidence that God is still cultivating His people.

The harvest of the field feeds the body.

The harvest of God’s work within us blesses the world around us.

So tonight, take a moment to reflect on how God has been growing you. What seeds has He planted? What fruit is beginning to appear? And where might He still be patiently tending the soil of your heart?

The God who brings forth the harvest from the earth is the same God who is faithfully growing His people day by day.
