Going to church

Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.

As we move through another week, Sunday may already feel like a distant memory. Yet it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on what “going to church” meant for each of us a few days ago.

For some, it meant travelling to a church building and finding their usual seat among familiar faces. Some may have worshipped in a large congregation, while others gathered in a small group where everyone knew one another.

Some may have watched a church service online from the comfort of their living room. Others may have watched a service later in the day because work, illness, caring responsibilities, or distance made attending in person impossible.

Others may have listened to worship music during a walk and spent time reading Scripture quietly on their own. While others may have gathered around a hospital bed, in a care home lounge, a prison chapel, or a community hall. There may be some who found themselves worshipping God while driving to work, serving others, or simply taking a few moments of stillness amid a busy day.

The ways we attend church may differ, but the purpose remains the same: drawing closer to God.

As members of the band we have the privilege of sharing worship and witness in different places, on different days of the week – in our own hall, a festival in another church, a visit to a care home, or carolling in our local area. Wherever we find ourselves, we are reminded that God’s presence is not limited by walls, buildings or even screens!

Church has never simply been a place we visit. Church is God’s people gathering in His name, encouraging one another, growing in faith, and serving the world around them.

Jesus said:

For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.

Matthew 18:20

As we continue through this week, perhaps our question should not simply be, “Did I go to church on Sunday?” but “Am I continuing to walk with God today?”

The worship we offered on Sunday was never intended to remain there. The faith we shared then is meant to shape the way we live now. Whether we’re at work, at home, in rehearsal, with family, or among friends, we continue to be God’s people wherever He places us.

May we be thankful for every opportunity to gather in worship, and may we carry Sunday’s blessing into each day that follows.
