Last Sunday, we reflected on the importance of carrying God’s light with us into a new week. We were reminded that church is not simply a place we visit on a Sunday but a place from which we are sent. We left worship encouraged to be light-bearers in our homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.
Now, a week later, it may be worth asking a simple question:
How brightly is that light still shining?
For many of us, the week may have started with the very best intentions. We felt inspired, hopeful, and ready to walk closely with God. Yet somewhere between Monday morning and Sunday evening, life’s pressures, disappointments, responsibilities, and distractions may have dimmed our enthusiasm.
The encouraging truth is that God never expected us to shine through our own strength.
A lamp can only continue to give light when it remains connected to its source of power. In the same way, our spiritual light is sustained when we remain connected to Christ. We do not carry the light because we are strong enough, wise enough, or faithful enough. We carry the light because He continues to shine through us.
Jesus said:
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.
John 15:5
The secret is not trying harder. The secret is staying closer.
Perhaps this week you saw opportunities to encourage someone. Perhaps you offered kindness to a stranger, patience to a colleague, or support to a friend. You may never know how much those simple acts meant to others. Small lights can make a tremendous difference in dark places.
A famous quote attributed to Anne Frank says:
How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.
Anne Frank
Every act of love, every word of encouragement, every prayer offered on behalf of another person brings a little more light into the world.
As another week approaches, we do not need to worry about how bright our light appears compared to others. God simply asks us to keep pointing people towards Him. A candle does not illuminate an entire city, yet it faithfully shines where it has been placed.
So tonight, before the new week begins, take a moment to pause. Thank God for the opportunities He gave you this week. Ask Him to refill your heart where it feels drained. Invite Him to rekindle anything that has grown dim.
The light you carried last Monday does not need to be exhausted by tonight. Through God’s grace, it can be renewed for the week ahead.
May the light you carried into this week become the light that guides you into the next. God is not finished with your story yet.
