He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;”
Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
My Dad always loved Finlandia by Sibelius, so I think that’s why it also became one of my favourites too. I first hear this arrangement of ‘Be Still’ by Dorothy Gates a number of months ago, when we first started practicing it in our band practice at Bellshill. The melody has an almost eerie sound to it, but as the tune progresses you really feel the emotion of it, and when you tie the words to the melody, it becomes even more powerful.
Be still, my soul: The Lord is on thy side; With patience bear thy cross of grief or pain. Leave to thy God to order and provide; In every change he faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: Thy best, thy heavenly Friend Thru thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Finlandia is a great melody, and I think the words we sing to it are just a perfect reminder that even when we’re going through difficult times, God remains faithful to us. And if we simply trust him in every situation, we will be rewarded in eternity.
