Leaving the light on

Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.

What I share today is similar to a post I shared in a blog post a few weeks ago, and wasn’t what I had planned on sharing as the band devotions today, but I felt this was what I was been led to share.

In the last few weeks since we put our clocks back an hour at the end of October, I’ve noticed several houses in our street how had a light on above their front door, or in their porch. It reminded me of a time before I was married, when I lived with my parents, when if I was out late at night, they’d leave the porch light on so it was easier for me to see the door lock, and get into the house., to help make it easier for the person to find their way home.

Even these days if out late or waiting for a visitor to arrive once it’s dark outside (pre coronavirus restrictions of course!), we still leave the porch light on so help guide us or our visitors to our home.

In turn this reminded me again how many passages in the bible tells us about light showing us the path to God.

Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell.

Psalm 43:3

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

Psalm 119:105

In the same we that the light we leave on in our porch, helps us to find our way home, so God leaves His light on for us to follow. In fact, God always leaves his light on, as he is ready and waiting to welcome us into his arms, whenever we follow the light to Him.

Anyone who comes to You
Anyone at all
With arms wide open
Anyone who reaches out
Any time at all
With a heart that's broken

You will be the shelter
You will have the answer
For anyone who ever
Cries out
In need
I believe there You will be

I stand on Your promise
Your love is forever
And I believe with all my heart
You are my water
Holy saviour
You are the comfort when my world falls apart
Into the ends of the earth
And for the rest of my life
I'll carry the light

Anytime I turn to You
Anytime at all
I find You waiting
Waiting for the chance to help me
Hold me, heal me
Show me just how amazing
Life can be when you know what it is to be free
To be free

Over the mountains, into the valleys
Crossing the ocean, I'll carry the light
And through the darkness
To all the hopeless for the all the broken I'll carry the light
