Today is the start Holy Week, one of the most important weeks in the Christian calendar, as it’s the week that takes us to Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Today is also known as ‘Palm Sunday’, as we remember Christ’s final arrival into Jerusalem.
The next day the news that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem swept through the massive crowd gathered for the feast. So they took palm branches and went out to meet him. Everyone was shouting, “Lord, be our Saviour! Blessed is the one who comes to us sent from Yahweh, the King of Israel!”John 12:12-13 (The Passion Translation)
These verses from John’s gospel make it sound as if everyone was a huge supporter of Christ, which did seem to be the case on that day. However, sadly, they were the same people who called for Jesus to be crucified later that same week.
Because those people in Jerusalem quickly turned against Jesus, Christians around the world this Palm Sunday will be asked to reconsider their own commitment to Christ as we consider Jesus’ journey to the cross.
So I encourage you today, to be honest with yourself and with Christ, as you also consider your commitment to Him – Does your promise to be faithful to Him always, still hold firm?
