We believe!

Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.

Why do you attend church, either in person, or virtually?

This question got me thinking about my faith, and the reason I attend church. In the Salvation Army we can at times put a lot of our focus on our musical sections (both our junior and senior bands and choirs). I’m definitely not suggesting this is a bad thing, as all our musical sections make a huge positive contribution to our worship, through their music.

So, let our faith be more than anthems
Greater than the songs we sing
We believe, we believe

I personally find the music used in our meetings, both by our musical sections and congregational songs, often bring me much closer to God. So I find being part of the band is a great privilege, as I believe our music can, and does, touch the hearts of those who hear the our music.

The words of the Newsboys song, ‘We Believe’, remind me that we must never let music, or our music making, be the main reason we attend church. Attending church must be first and foremost about God. Our worship must be about praising Him and learning more about Him. Yes, we can praise God through our music making, but our faith must always be more than anthems, more than the music the play, because we must believe in God!

We believe in God the Father

So, let our faith be more than anthems

And in our weakness and temptations
We believe, we believe

We believe in God the Father

We believe in the Holy Spirit
And He's given us new life
We believe in the crucifixion
We believe that He conquered death
We believe in the resurrection
And He's comin' back again

Let the lost be found and the dead be raised
In the here and now, let love invade
Let the church live love our God will see
