We may not like it, but I’m sure we’ve all found ourselves behaving differently when we believe no-one can see or hear us – Maybe when we’re alone in our car, or we’re the only one at home. We may find ourselves saying or doing things which we would never do when we’re with others, possibly because we make more of an effort when we’re not alone, to bite out tongues, hold our tempers, and restrain our impulses, and be pleasant and helpful to everyone. Maybe this is why Hebrews 12:1 jumps out at us.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us
Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)
The Lord is always watching, and if we’re honest, that should be motivation enough for us to take care what we say and do when we think no-one is watching. That’s why it feels like we need to remind ourselves constantly that God is always watching over us, cheering us on toward obedience, faithfulness, and perseverance. So take time to remind yourself that God is always watching, and let that encourage you to stop you from being tempted by foolish things, to sin when you think there will be no witnesses to your sin.
In Genesis 28:16-17 we read that Jacob said,
Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it … How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.
Genesis 28:16-17
That’s exactly what we should be thinking about where we are now, as in reality, everywhere we go and everyplace we rest is “the gate of heaven”…if only we had eyes to see.
