Some weeks seem to fly by. Others feel as though they contain far more than the usual seven days. This has definitely been one of the latter.
It all started on Sunday evening when I began to develop a cold and those familiar chills that seem to drain your energy before you even realise what is happening. Since then, I haven’t really felt myself for most of the week. Nothing too serious, thankfully, but enough to make everything feel that bit harder than normal.
Getting up for work each morning has been a struggle. Staying focused throughout the day has taken more effort than usual. When you’re not feeling your best physically, even routine tasks can seem much bigger than they really are. Perhaps that’s why this working week has felt so incredibly long.
Yet, as I sit and look back over the week, I realise it has actually been quite a productive one. Being the end of one sprint and the beginning of another meant there was plenty to do. Reporting on project progress, reviewing work completed, planning ahead, and making sure everything was ready for the next phase kept me busy throughout the week. At the time it felt relentless, but looking back there is a sense of satisfaction in knowing that despite feeling under the weather, the important things still got done.
Away from work, however, some things have had to wait. The housework has certainly been one of those casualties. I’ve looked at various jobs needing done throughout the week and simply haven’t had the energy or motivation to tackle them. Sometimes that’s just the way it has to be. Rest and recovery need to take priority, even when the to-do list seems to have other ideas.
As Friday night arrives, I’m not necessarily glad it’s the weekend as much as I’m grateful for the opportunity to slow down a little and hopefully recover properly. My hope is that over the next day or so I’ll begin to feel more like myself again and find the energy to catch up on some of the things I’ve neglected this week.
For now, though, I’m choosing to focus on the positives. The week may have felt long, but it was still productive. The challenges were real, but they weren’t insurmountable. And perhaps the reminder to slow down and take things one day at a time has been a lesson worth learning.
I’m not ending this week with everything ticked off my list. There are still jobs around the house waiting to be done and a few things I’ll need to pick up again next week. But considering how I’ve felt for much of this week, I’m content with what I’ve managed to achieve. Sometimes success isn’t about doing everything; it’s about simply keeping going when you’d rather stop. On that basis, this week has been a success after all.
When we’re tired, run down, and struggling to keep up with everything around us, it’s comforting to remember Jesus’ invitation:
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest
Matthew 11:28
Tonight, I think rest is exactly what’s needed.
