Well, here we are again. Another Friday night. Another working week safely tucked away behind us.
It’s funny how Mondays often arrive with a sense of possibility, yet by Friday evening many of us are wondering where those five days actually went. Meetings were attended, emails were answered, jobs were completed, problems were solved, and somehow the week marched steadily onwards while we were busy doing all the things that needed done.
A quote often attributed to Bill Watterson is: “Weekends don’t count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless.”
Now, I’m not entirely sure “completely pointless” should be our goal, but there is certainly wisdom in remembering that not every moment needs to be productive. We spend so much of our lives working, planning and organising that sometimes the best thing we can do is simply pause.
Friday night gives us permission to exhale.
The alarms can wait a little longer tomorrow. The inbox can remain unopened. The unfinished tasks can stay exactly where they are until Monday. For a few precious hours, we can stop measuring progress and simply enjoy the gift of time.
Perhaps your weekend will be busy. Perhaps it will be quiet. Perhaps it will involve family, friends, church activities, hobbies, football, music, or simply a comfortable chair and a favourite cup of tea. Whatever lies ahead, tonight marks a small but important milestone: you made it through another week.
Not every week is easy. Not every week goes according to plan. Yet each Friday reminds us that we are often stronger than we think. We carry more than we realise, and by God’s grace we keep moving forward one day at a time.
So as this Friday evening unfolds, take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come since Monday morning. Celebrate the small victories. Learn from the challenges. Be thankful for the people who helped along the way.
And most importantly, give yourself permission to rest.
After all, Monday will find us soon enough.
For now, enjoy Friday night.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28
May your evening be peaceful, your weekend refreshing, and your heart ready for whatever blessings the days ahead may bring.
