Keep the flame alive

Last Sunday, we reflected on carrying the light that Christ has placed within us and making a conscious choice to keep it burning throughout the week. Tonight, as another week draws to a close, perhaps the question is not whether we carried the light perfectly, but whether we are willing to let God rekindle it once again.

The reality is that some weeks leave us feeling bright and energised. We see God’s hand at work, our prayers seem alive, and our faith feels strong. Then there’s other weeks (like this one for me) that leave us feeling tired, discouraged, or distracted. Life has a way of draining our energy and shifting our focus.

Yet the truth is that God’s light was never meant to depend entirely on our strength.

Paul reminded Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:6, that:

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you.

2 Timothy 1:6

Paul did not tell Timothy to create the fire, as the fire was already there. He simply reminded him that the fire needed attention, care, and fresh fuel.

Perhaps tonight is an opportunity to pause and ask ourselves:

  • Where have I seen God’s light this week?
  • Where has my flame grown dim?
  • What do I need to surrender to God before the new week begins?

The good news is that God delights in renewing what has grown weary. He meets us in our weakness, breathes fresh hope into our hearts, and reminds us that His mercies are new every morning.

As we step into a new week, we do not carry the light alone. The Holy Spirit walks with us, guiding our steps, strengthening our faith, and helping us shine even when circumstances seem dark.

There’s an old Salvation Army song that says, “Send the fire today!”

It is a simple but powerful request. Not a fire that last for just this moment in time, but a fire that continues to burn in service, worship, kindness, and faithfulness.

So tonight, take a moment in God’s presence. Lay down the burdens of the past week. Give thanks for the blessings God has provided. Receive His forgiveness where needed, and then ask Him to fan the flame once more.

The light you carry may be exactly what someone else needs to see this week.

The light that God places within us is not meant merely to survive the darkness, but to shine through it.

May the Lord bless you, refresh you, and keep His flame burning brightly within you as you enter a new week.
