Like Him I’ll be

Earlier today on Bellshill Salvation Army Band’s Facebook page I shared some devotions. I’d like to share those devotions with you tonight.

I recently read the following story.

Father Michael was walking along the pavement in front of his church when he heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son, Rory, and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and some cotton wool, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased.

Rory, the minister’s son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said, ‘Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.’

This story not only amused me, but also challenged me! They challenged me to consider how other may be copying my words and actions, and whether I am being a good example for others to follow.

Be imitators of God in everything you do, for then you will represent your Father as his beloved sons and daughters.

Ephesians 5:1 (The Passion Translation)

While writing these devotions I found words of a chorus that I learned as a young junior soldier going through my mind. Words which I know I didn’t really understand when I first sang them, but words which now I sing as my sincere prayer, because I want to be more like Jesus.

I hope that we can each make this our prayer for today and every day.

To be like Jesus!
This hope possesses me,
In every thought and deed,
This is my aim, my creed;
To be like Jesus!

His Spirit helping me,
Like him I'll be.
